Todays Tutorial

Hi All,

At 2pm today we have the turning/lathe tutorial with Alejandro Bona.

Below is a timber lathe annotated with the correct names for each part:

And the same for a metal lathe:

Both essentially work the same way; you grasp a piece of material with the headstock/chuck and it spins the material on an axis, then you use tools to modify the radius of the material. It's amazing what you can do with such a simple operation.

Following the turning/lathe demo, at 3:30pm, we have the Roland CNC demonstration with Daniel Castillio supervising.

Should be a fun day!

CNC Demo Today

Hi All,

We have our CNC demo today kicking off at 2pm. See you then.

For inspiration, all the below were CNC Milled:

And finally, two non-architecture video clips to finish off:

This Ferrari is made in one piece ...

This Zhonda is made in multiple pieces (using a large flat bed CNC Mill similar to the two we have in the back of the workshop); note especially that he screws the parts together with long wood screws as well as gluing them (at minute 1:45) ... interesting ...

Constructivist Machines vs Stencil Graffiti

Hi All,

I mentioned some very cool old Russian Constructivist drawings of machines to Andrew last time we met ... I couldn't find them on the internet, but did find them in one of my old lectures from 2005 (originally scanned from an old journal article, which I think was (AD").

In the lecture I was comparing them to stencil graffiti which as just making the headlines in 2005. I thought I'd leave them together to see what you think over a decade later ...

Download PDF here.

My favorite is the drill on slide 3 (seen below), although the machines on slide 10 and 13 are also top shelf.
